The River
"Where the Walker runs down to the Carson Valley Plain,
"There lived a maiden, Darcy Farrow was her name.
"The daughter of old Dundee and a fair one was she,
"The sweetest flower that bloomed o'er the range."
Steve Gillette
Rivers have their stories, and this one honors a sweet girl, who died in a fall, riding her pony to help a neighbor. Our history as a nation includes so many stories of neighbor helping neighbor, set in the beauty of the landscape. The title is from one of my favorite folk songs, written by Steve Gillette. I learned it from the singing of Ian Tyson and Sylvia Fricker and heard Steve sing it at the Vanguard Coffeehouse in Kansas City, Missouri.
